From the harder view blag:
Quote In a recent article in the Australian magazine 3d World, showtek gave an interview publicizing their upcoming Australian tour, during which they mentioned âWeâre not going to stay a hardstyle act.â
Woah, what?
So, maybe it isnât as dramatic as it seems, they add: âWe are really working on our own sound and I think weâve already accomplished a lot. Tiesto, for example, is not a trance DJ â but his music sounds a bit trancy. Heâs just a brand nowadays, and, with Showtek, itâs actually the sameâ. They follow it up with âWe are not going to make house or trance. We are going to develop our sound even more- tracks like Electronic Stereophonic is really our stuff. Youâll seeâ.
So how did we get here? Firstly, itâs not surprising that showtek are breaking away from hardstyle. Showtek have always been a strange brand, an outsider, a dutch duo far more embraced worldwide than in their homeland. The most recognizable and arguably the most successful hardstyle act ever, yet they do not garner the respect amongst the hardstyle faithful that other legendary artists do. Their sound is one of the few to break free from the constraints of hardstyle, one of the few hardstyle brands recognizable in pop culture.
And their split from hardstyle has been further facilitated recently with showtek deciding to split with the platinum booking agency to form their own booking agency to handle them and other dutch master works artists, after a rumored falling out with platinum refusing to book them at a certain hardstyle festival (For those who donât know: Platinum booking agency handles most big names in hardstyle, and Q-dance almost exclusively books through platinum, leading to allegations of corruption, shady dealing and anti competitive practices).
Showtek are one of the few hardstyle acts who have the crowd pulling ability to do this (as they effectively waved goodbye to ever playing at a Q-dance event again), and they have an unashamedly popular, worldwide sound. No massive name in hardstyle could afford to not be booked at Q-dance parties; but showtek are not trying to be a massive hardstyle name, they are trying to be a massive name full stop.
So what will this showtek actually sound like, if it isnât hardstyle? Obviously their recent album is a good indicator, especially the track âElectronic Stereophonicâ, of which I have never seen a producer beat off to their own track as much as showtek have with this one, mentioning it in almost every interview since the album came out.
Ultimately, it seems like a more accessible sound, without as much of the âdistorted and aggressive soundsâ that accompany most hardstyle, to use Waltâs words. Think a softer âhard danceâ sound that blends genres, coming from a hardstyle direction but containing elements from different genres like rock, trance, house and pop. Itâs still undeniably showtek, with their sound almost instantly recognizable from their productions. In fact, itâs really a sound that is just more showtek, and less hardstyle, to sum it up.
And so, we see this positioning makes sense in a wider view of showtek trying to really forge their own place, their own niche in the hard dance scene- not limited by any genre expectations, producing whatever they want, playing at what parties they like, globetrotting worldwide. Analogue players in a digital world, anyone?
What do you guys think?
Dubstyle is the new style.

Hardly that surprising really. Although i don't like there new sound, i can respect them for waning to break away and do things themselves.

Good riddance. Hardstyle breathes a sigh of relief. One worthless act down, only a bunch more to go before hardstyle is redeemed.

Popstyle or RnBstyle anything to make a bit more cash and inflate their egos a little bit more (if that's possible?). I agreed with Anth. Fuck off.

Meh, good luck to them. Better to be open about it. I respect them for being open enough to go in a new direction, even if it's a direction I don't think I will like (the Tiesto comparison seems scarily accurate).
They do come across as arrogant cawks though. I can handle self-belief and even classy arrogance, but they just seem like douches. I was never the biggest Showtek fan, but they lost me a fair bit when one of them jumped on the mic and called FTS "the greatest song in the 10yrs hardstyle has existed" at their Sydney show in December 08, and it's only gotten worse from there. The constant bleeting about Electronic Stereophonic is just sad.
For all that people might not like the Q/Platinum thing, it's still much more preferable to supporting wankers like these two IMO.

electronic stereophonic is fucking awesome. so it should be *bleated about haha
listening to their album in the car today on the way home, i was actually reflecting about the level of "hardstyle" on the album. it is more of a hard dance album than hard style. a lot of it is like a mash up of hard/nu style in a lot of kicks and some sounds, and commercial dance. which is fine, it is one of the best produced albums i've ever listened to, but yeh, it is obvious that they're going a lot more commercial.
in terms of it being good riddance, i don't agree, i love most of showtek's stuff, but it'd be good if they did the occasional hardstyle track from now on if they are pursuing something softer.
however yeh they are a bit arrogant

Everybody knows I used to be the biggest Showtek fan around, but after the Melbourne/Sydney remixes, they went completely downhill.

Well. Electronic Stereophonic is a good track imo. So if that is what we can expect than i don't mind.
But i don't expect anything from Showtek these days, and that's a shame because they are one of the most skilled producers in the scene.

They were quite good until Down With This, Black 2008 was their last good track if you ask me. Just nice to see them splitting from hardstyle, as Derelict said, one less shitty, just a few more shitty ones left that needs to GTFO..

Good riddance and good luck to em. Hopefully they make it big into mainstream but never use the word hardstyle again so as not to bring their new fans into the hardstyle scene.
Still arrogant cocks though.

They have been going downhill for the last few years so I don't give a damn and i'm not really curious for their new music. Wouldn't mind some solo productions from Walt though!

By the looks of things I'm one of the only people who still support Showtek
I still appreciate their music, not as hardstyle but just for what it is; Incredibly well produced, catchy cheese.
